D-I-A-B-E-T-E-S. Nasty stuff. NASTY! My grandmother had it and ultimately died from it. She gave herself shots every single day, then went out to the bakery and bought herself sweet rolls. I remember when she developed an aneurism on her heart and the doctor told my mother to take care of my grandmother 24/7, making sure she stuck to her diet, or else the aneurism would pop and she would die.
When I found my grandmother sneaking a slice of bread in the middle of the night, I flew into a rage. Then I overheard her praying in bed at night, "Dear God, please take me!" It tore me up. She was a sweet women who deserved a better granddaughter than I. God granted her wish; she died shortly afterwards.
Don't tell anyone, BL, but I changed my diet drastically from The Program. My IBS wasn't getting any better, so I figured I had nothing to lose but to eat only healthy stuff that I might be able to lose weight on, and damn the IBS! I cut out a LOT of carbs, especially bread, and immediately began feeling better (and lost weight). That's when my IBS went into remission, believe it or not. Besides breaking a LOT of the diet rules, I'm eating red meat and loving it; I can't get enough of the stuff. Don't tell anyone.
Whenever I'm really hungry, I dive into deli corned beef. Do you know how fantastic that stuff tastes? OMG! I tried making my own -- it took 4 days to marinate/pickle that stuff! -- but it was well worth it. To die for.
I really don't miss bread, I really don't. Now that I know it doesn't agree with my IBS, I have no desire for it. I think we get to the point where we don't like the stuff that we know will make us sick.
Let us know what you learn in the nutrition class. It should be very interesting. Try to look on this as a new experience, BL. I know it's nasty stuff -- I remember what Grandma went through -- but we all have our cross to bear, and this one is obviously yours -- together with the IBS, vision, back and foot problems -- oy! However, I think once you learn the proper diet for YOU, you'll eventually start to feel better, and if you don't do as my Grandmother did, you should live a long and happy life.
