I'm so sorry to hear about your friend and his mother, Nelly. At least he has such a good friend to rely upon.
My grandmother's going through the same illness. My grandpa is so good with her, though, and has the most patience I have ever seen. He has a sheet printed out with important information on it, such as kids, grandkids, her brothers and sisters, etc. It also has some statements on it, such as "Rosemary is home and has no other home" since one of her big things is demanding for my grandpa to take her home, even when they are home.
Whenever I go over there, I always wear a name tag for her (especially since I got a new hairstyle) that says "Jenni (Lucy's daughter)" and she always thanks me for it.
Hopefully your friend's brother comes around because family and friends are so important when illnesses occur like this.
