I'm not necessarily paralyzed by the fear of throwing up, but I certainly don't like it! Thankfully during most of my ms I just had a sick-to-my-stomach feeling... unfortunately it was all day every day. My ms IS for the most part gone now, I just can't tolerate a few smells.
I believe the increase in hormones is the cause of the sensitive smellers. They have linked the HCG hormone to be the culprit in most ms. According to my OB, the reason moms-to-be throw up a lot is because of the increase in stomach acid production... it causes more of a gag reflex which then causes you to throw up... that's why they tell you to constantly have something in your tummy. Unfortunately with some, myself included, it's difficult to put anything into your tummy because everything repulses you. Thankfully for most, once your hormones start to level out and the placenta takes over with hormone production, ms goes away, and you feel closer to normal.
