My folks are the same way...insensitive. Once, my mother bought me a dress that was short and strapless. Well, it is against my religion to expose my shoulders and my legs above the knees. When I said "thanks, but I can't wear that," she got really offended and stomped around for the rest of the day. Parents seem to think they know what's best for us all the time and end up offending us sometimes.
She's also told me that I needed to lose weight, usually when I really need to gain weight. The irony is that she is very overweight. Of course, I would never say anything to her about her weight...that would be mean...besides, most people already know if they need to lose, telling us to lose weight isn't going to make us say "gee, I had no idea I was out of shape, I'm so glad my mother pointed that out for me."
