I'm an old Mainer who can no longer tolerate the miserable weather back there, so I live out west now.
Does your SIL enjoy the usual touristy stuff? If so, then I'd recommend York Beach or Camden. My relatives had property on Wells Beach, and it was gorgeous at one time (now too touristy for me). Does your SIL prefer something by a lake instead of the ocean? Check out Moose Pond or Rangeley Lakes. We had a cottage on Lake Kezar, and there are some new campgrounds there. You can't go wrong with any of the lakes in Maine; they're all very beautiful, although no longer pristine as I remember them as a little girl. That was before the movie "On Golden Pond" came out; then all hell broke loose and Maine has never been the same since.
If your SIL is going in the summer, count on hot muggy weather with lots of bugs. We used to return to Raymond Lake every summer for the annual rowing camp, and it was pure heaven rowing with the loons. I didn't mind the bugs, and if I got hot I just jumped in the lake. But that's me...
Regardless, I hope your SIL enjoys herself. It's a beautiful state, and will always be my home no matter where I live.
