It's important to see a GI to rule out other stuff that can mimic IBS. A colonoscopy can check for IBDs and all sorts of baddies.

In the meantime, read Heather's notes on here on IBS and the diet. If it is IBS, then I'd recommend getting "IBS:The First Year", which is an incredibly helpful book. Try the What To Eat When You Can't Eat Anything Diet for a few days and see if that helps. If it is IBS, then a soluble fibre supplement will also be very helpful - and it can't hurt, so I'd start on one asap. Click here for dosage advice, etc.
