How old is your kitten? If he's been with his mom for long enough, mom should have tought him to use a litter box - they catch on to this one pretty easily since it's instictual for them to dig when they want to pee or pooh. On the space thing - one thing I would recommend is to give kitty his own room for awhile if possible. Having the whole run of the house all of a sudden on day one might be intimidating for the little guy. If you have a spare room of any kind that is rather smallish and kitten proofed, maybe just put him in there with his food and his litter box and any toys or other things that seem to calm him. Spend time with him in the room on and off so he gets used to the idea of having people types around. He'll get comfortable to the smaller space before the bigger space. He's also less likely to loose track of the litter box - or be too scared to sneak accross the house to use it - in a smaller space. Just an idea. I'm sure it's hard for your daughter to be patient!
