Irritable Bowel Syndrome Message Boards | Warning - Spyware

Following warning was posted on my server http://www.bfree.on.ca. It effects dial up users only.

Phone Dialers are small programs that download and install themselves to your computer, often with no notification or permission of the Internet user. The rare times permission is sought from the user, the installation program will appear to be an application of a completely different nature.

These programs, once installed, will use the modem which you use to connect to the Internet to make toll calls; often to overseas phone numbers.

Many Internet users do not understand that a modem is nothing more then a telephone which the computer uses in the same manner which you use your household phone. As such, any phone calls made by the computer will appear to Bell Canada as no different then if you made them.

Bell Canada's approach to this problem as officially been that the phone line and its use is the responsibility of the home owner, and Bell will not waive or dismiss any long distance phone call charges as a result of Phone Dialers.

The best way to protect yourself from this threat is to run "spyware" removal software, and to keep the definition files up to date.
