Hey guys... dog discussion, my favorite! First off... about Goldens, do they take up a lot of space? My husband I are thinking about getting one the next time we get a dog. Although we love our doggies to death, they aren't the type that will walk off leash safely, or come when you call them. We'd like to get a dog that's a little more obedient. We're worried about having enough space for a Golden though. We're also trying to figure out how to get a good one from a rescue group, as we'd never buy a dog (not trying to criticize, that's just our outlook on it). This is all in the future though, as the next thing we're likely to acquire is either a guinea pig or a baby human.
As for the puppy training, I have always heard (and found to be true) that puppies settle down at about 18 months. We were quite sleep deprived and fed up with our Cara until she hit that age (we wised up and adopted Charlie when he was already 18 months as we didn't have time to "bring up" another puppy). Even with Charlie we had a lot of frustration, he was extremely hard to potty train and he liked to bark a lot. Patience is my biggest piece of advice. I'm sure your dog just wants to make you happy, he or she just has to figure out how to do so. And don't compare your dog to others at training, anymore than you should compare your child to others at kidnergarten. They all have different developmental speeds. Just practice every day, praise like crazy when they're good, and you'll get there.
I made sure to get a husband that would never tell me no more dogs. In fact he's the one that really wants the Golden puppy. I've told him no more dogs until we move again and have a place with a yard that's twice as big!
