Maine is very beautiful and cool, but if you don't like mosquitoes, go with your gut instinct and come to Oregon.

Mountains, check. Great restaurants, check. (Oh - and you don't even need reservations here... it's not crowded.) Beautiful hotels in all price ranges, check. Scenery, world class. Check. Romance. Hubba. Major international airport - 15 minutes from downtown. Check. Art. Music. Casual attire de riguer, even at the opera. People almost as friendly as Californians (since most of us came from there anyway). Uncrowded, wild beaches. 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition, other colorful history. Check check check. River Runs Through It. Check. Great shopping and NO SALES TAX. Check.
Your local public library should have plenty of materials to help you plan something great. Even if you don't come for this anniversary, plan to come some time in the future.

P.S. Portland is only a 3 hour drive from Seattle. Vancouver, B.C. is only another couple of hours past that. You'd love all three, I think.
