I agree with Nugget - support is very, very, very essential in trying to deal with this syndrome. I'd say second is maintaining a strict diet to keep from eating food that hurts (for bad days, I always have rice and Heather's fennel tea around). And thirdly, I already have other health issues that require different meds, so for the IBS my GI has me take Align. After about a month, it really worked.
