I had one recently (my first) - I did what the Dr told me which was 3 Dulcolax and a lot of special fluid 5 hours later (and I wasn't too bothered). My sister needs them every couple years and has had very bad reactions to the fluid (severe nausea/vomiting) so last time she only took pills (I don't know what pills they were or how many). It's possible she drank lots of water or Gatorade to compensate for lack of the special fluid. She said her Dr told her after that the prep was fine.

My understanding/guess is that prepping with the fluid tends to get better results, and doing without the fluid should be reserved for people with really severe reactions. My dad is a doctor (though not a GI doctor) and told me that all the nurses he know who have these use the fluid when they prep (as does my dad). The implication is that they'd be more likely than the average person to know what is best to do, and if there was some secret easier way they'd be using it.

**TMI Warning**

When I was prepping for mine, I found I didn't really start cleaning out until I drank the fluid, and the more fluid that went through me, the cleaner and cleaner I was getting. So for me, I don't think my prep would have been as good without it.
