"Doctors Unmoved by Bowel Misery
The distress and discomfort of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) earns little sympathy from many doctors, according to a UK survey. The majority of US doctors interviewed believed that IBS, while unpleasant, was not a serious medical condition, while four out of five admitted that they did not follow established treatment guidelines.

Nearly a third of the doctors said that IBS was mainly a psychological problems, instead of a genuine physical complaint. Support groups say that some doctors still have little time for patients complaining of IBS symptoms."

This really, REALLY, annoyed me. (annoyed being the polite word for P!*sEd OFF)

I find it frustrating how doctors can just neglect such a distressing disorder.
This is perhaps why IBS is considered uncommon. Because those lucky enough not to have it, brush it under the carpet.

I'm from the UK, and I can tell you, our docs neglect this issue just as much as the US doctors mentioned in the quote/article.

I had to learn all about IBS on my own. Not even my family (meaning my mother) would help me. She stuck with the doctors and said - it's all in my head. BULLS**T.

You know what I reckon? That the doctors diagnosing IBS dont even know themselves.... They're following textbooks. Giving out bad advice.

My doctor said to me - There is no cure. Somedays you'll have bad days, some days you'll have good. Here's some spasmanol for the bad days. And try to eat more Fibrery foods, like Brown Bread, Bran etc...

Now - I'd love to go and sit in the room with him and give him a lesson in IBS and what it is all about. I'd even tell my doctor to recommend this website to his patients.

So - enough of the rambling.

I was wondering, does anybody have any ideas of how we can make others (mainly bad advising doctors) more aware of IBS and the such nessessary precautions to take?
