I have been late for work many times, to the point of being written up for it and close to having a 3 day non-paid suspension. Which, if it weren't for the wedding ($$$$), that might be OK. LOL! Anyway... yours is a severe case as mine is, and I really think that most people that come to this site find themselves "stifled" by the disease. If a drug addict or alcoholic can be classified as having a "disease", then I certainly feel that the stress/IBS deal should even more legitimately be qualifiable as a disability. Not to be abused, of course, anymore than any other disability, but it definitely can hinder a "normal" life. Anyway... think it over and do what's best.
