Hey Melissa,
I've had LOTS of experience in this area, as I've had gone from my parent's insurance, to buying my own separate insurance, to now using the grad student insurance at my school.
First of all, there is something called COBRA, that I would check into if I were you. Under COBRA, all insurance companies are required to offer continuation of coverage to people that would otherwise lose their coverage (i.e. dependents, people that quit or lose their job, etc). Depending on your insurance company, it can be extended up to something like 18 months after your coverage is supposed to end. You have to apply for it before your coverage would lapse...and once you turn it down, and get insurance elsewhere, you can't get it again. I wish I had known about this, because I would have saved myself lots of money by using COBRA and staying on my parents insurance for that extended time! Not to mention, I wouldn't have lost my dental and eye insurance.
Here's a brief link describing it:

So, best bet would to see if your parent's insurance has COBRA. If not, I would look into your school's insurance -- this is the next cheapest, and depending on your school may not be such a bad plan (Mine is Blue Cross Blue Shield, and our health center is actually pretty decent, so its definitely worth it...plus we have awesome physical therapy thats included...the only thing that gets expensive is meds.)
