Whew! I backed out of this, but now I think I will add my last two cents.
1. Personally, I would not want to be kept in a vegetative state for a long period of time and I DO want to be cremated. Also, I do NOT hold the belief that everyone should want the same as me.
2. Regarding quality of life, my friend was in a vegetative state for a short time and says he doesn't remember anything that occurred during that time, but who knows over a longer period of time. I can think of several conditions that would make living very difficult: quadriplegics, Alzheimer's, severe burns over most of the body (esp. disfiguring), etc. There are many more conditions that make living tragic for the afflicted and/or the caregivers. Where do we draw the line? A person with severe Alzheimer's is clearly not the same person she was and this impacts severely on the quality of life for her and her family. Should we stop feeding her? Wait! She might ask for food. (you see my point)
