Some other suggestions...

There have been some really good suggestions from everyone. I'm just going to add maybe there is a shelter or organization in Maine that will foster your cats for a couple of weeks if you explain the emergency situation? Here is a link to petfinder.org I selected cat for type of animal and typed in the state Maine and a bunch of organizations came up. I would maybe start with those? I know cats are tough because there are so many without homes, however maybe some of these organizations can point you to someone/someplace that could help you? Also, maybe someone in your vet's office could help? A lot of vet techs and other people who work in vet's offices are there because they love animals, so someone may be willing to help you out - esp. since it's just temporary.

I have been in a similar situation (not exactly the same - no lease was involved) and I have three cats. It actually happened shortly after I rescued our third cat (all three of them are former strays, actually). And one of the cats will only deal with me or my boyfriend - I think she may have been born to a feral mom.

Anyway - I feel your stress and with having health problems this is the last thing you need. You didn't say what the situation was with your lease being terminated, but I would definitely look into whether or not it's legal to make you be out in one week. I thought it was pretty standard to have to give tenants 30 days, but I don't know what the laws are in Maine. Since you're living on one income, maybe you could call Legal Aid? (That's what it's called here in Delaware - not sure if it's the same everywhere?) Here's a link I found on yahoo when I typed in "legal aid in Maine" legal aid/assistance I don't know if any of these organizations are near you, reputable, or if you would even qualify (it can't hurt to call and ask if you do).

I'm really sorry all of this upheaval and chaos is happening to you. I will continue to think about what you might be able to do, esp. with regard to the kitties.

Keep your chin up. Things usually have a way of working out.
