Stationary bikes, actually, are okay for cardio. There's far less impact on your joints than with running (treadmills). Yuo can get a stationary bike that will have a "hilly" program in it (may pay more for it), that will give you just as much of a lung buster workout.
Bev's right though, with rowing machines (my all time favorite cardio), you do have to be serious and use it correctly... the technique requires a lot of attention at first, but once you get it down, it's cake.
Really, I think it's more about what you enjoy doing. A treadmill may provide a better workout than a bike, but I HATE running (in any form, and walking in place drives me nuts), but I love rowing and biking. I lost a good deal of weight riding a bike 60 minutes a day on the hilly setting(one 40 mniute ride and one 20 minute ride). Course, I was also working out 6 days a week at the time.
