jaime, you're right!

my mother (& father, but less so--my grandmother loves it as her gut is nearly as bad as mine with reflux/ulcers. okay, i guess, my grandmother totally understands and adores my 'haute cuisine' as it's agreeable!) doesn't get it. she says hurtful/spiteful things. she looks in my fridge/cupboards & at my boney body (yes, retrograde's comparison to joan didion was eerie) and pale/ashen complexion and JUDGES! i know, countless books have been written about mothers/daughters and the food thing. bulimic mom/anorectic daughter. she doesn't get it that certain foods HURT me. she will never understand it, i fear. my standard response is MIND YOUR OWN PLATE! she flips when she sees what's in my grocery cart. do you have the same problem with your mother? my father, though, almost "gets it" which is a blessing. tehe...i hope someone kidnaps my grandmother and brings her over for dinner/lunch this weekend. i so miss SHARING dinner/lunch and eating bonding time with those i cherish. it's depressing eating alone.

it's a journey and it's not about weightloss...it's about a new understanding about food, the self, the body...what nourishes/sustains. you are so right about what is perceived/misunderstood as "trashy carbs" are the most nourishing/sustaing foods around. why? because they don't HURT me. because they don't make me vomit. they don't give me cramps or D. they give me the energy to laugh--yes, carbs sure energize those giggling muscles!--to experience pleasure, to write, to plan, to clean, to dream, to sleep at night, to co-ordinate my motor functions, to be grateful...

you can't do anything if what you're eating is making you sick. i'm worth more than that, so...i'll eat angelfood cake anyday! (my mother can eat brussels sprouts and meat/fish)

i like to think that this board is more about food journey/relationships too versus exclusively weightloss/fitness goals. i'm seeking nourishment, stability, food savvy/self-confidence. also, my goal is to eat less fiber and anything i want that is safe; i'm better at that each day. kitchen-nazi begone! does this sound semi-familiar?

Kate.
