SP, I know how you feel. I'm always embarrassed if I make a sound, ya know? What I do about the sound -- and the smell -- is flush immediately (the minute it comes out). Oh dear. Sorry guys. The sound of the flushing also helps drown out the noise, if any.
I always carry a big purse, and it goes into the bathroom with me, mainly because I need all my stuff (especially the potty wipes). Why not stick a little bottle of air freshener in your purse? I know it sounds a little ridiculous, BUT if it'll solve your fear or concern, it's not ridiculous at all. They have air fresheners now that aren't real perfumy but just "clear" the air.
