Hi!
Welcome to the boards. My 8 year old is showing symptoms of ibs but has not been diagnosed as I'm following the diet with her and it seems to have calmed her down. I have a 6 year old with lactose intolerance too so we're using to finding alternatives for meals in our house!
I find that most 'popular' foods can be subbed by safer alternatives, and I just experiment - it's amazing what my kids like to eat now once I tried them with it.
Hopefully as he's 12 he'll realise that it's better to have different foods if he's going to feel better.
I hope this has helped a bit, as you can tell by the people who post here, you are definetly NOT alone, any time you want to post please do so.
Sarah
