I hope someone can help me. Here is my story. When I was in my early 20's, I had several problems with vomiting and nausea (sp?). I went through the following tests: Ultrasound of my stomach, and an endoscopy. The doctor found nothing wrong. It was determined that my symptoms were caused by stress. The doctor did pose the question of how my bowel movements were. I revealed that since my early teens - I would have boughts of diarreha (especially after I would eat - then go out to play). It never happened more than once in a day. I would also go from having the diarreha to constipation to having normal bowel movements. The doctor stated I was also suffering from IBS.

In the end the doctor prescribed Tagamet to help control the acidity in my stomach from the stress. I have been on acid reducers ever since. Please be aware I never experienced any abdominal pain (only cramping when I had the diarreha - once I went the pain was gone). I have always been able to each beef, pork, chicken, pizza, ice cream, cheese, etc. The only time I would have the diarreha is when I would eat a very "rich" meal or if I would be active right after a meal.

I started the LA Weight Loss diet 9 weeks ago. This diet consisted of Protein (2 portions per day), 4 servings of vegetables per day, 3 servings of fruit per day, and 2 starches per day, 4 oz. of dairy and 1 Tbsn. of fat (margarine or 1 tsp. of butter). I ate like this for 9 weeks and was able to lose 27lbs.

During these 9 weeks, I had not suffered any diarreha attacks - however, it seemed I was a little constipated. I was told this might happen. I would eat prunes and drink hot water with lemon to help me go. I would get pretty gassey when this happened. It would usually go away once I had the bowell movement.

Just recently, I ate out for dinner. I had pork tenderloin, garlic mashed potatos, and sauteed vegetables (in butter). It was very difficult to stay on my diet - though I did not each very much of the potatos.

When I got home, approximately 2 hours later I had a SEVERE attack of abdominal pain w/cramping with an unbelievable amount of gas (burning in my upper GI). I ended up vomiting to just get rid of the gas.

It has now been two weeks since then and I am still suffering. It seems anything I eat, I have abdominal cramping. I went to see my doctor, and she ordered an ultrasound to check my gallbladder, kidneys and liver. All checked out. Considering my past, she claimed it was the IBS.

I have tried doing the "White Diet" I found on another web site to help with my symptoms. Once I started adding back in the foods I could (chicken first, then potatos without the skin), when I got to eating the potatos, I went back into distress.

Here is my dilema: After purchasing your two books "Eating for IBS and IBS the First Year - I am really confused. First, I don't believe I had IBS before - No foods really trigered it. But now, could this be IBS??? If I did have IBS - is it possible that my symptons would change and if that's the case - will it ever return to the way it was???

Please help, I do not know where to turn.

Thank you for listening.
