My neurogastroenterologist thinks I have visceral hypersensitivity and some kind of variant of IBS . Although my system is sluggish, I have neither C nor D, just absolutely dreadful urgency. It’s definitely triggered by some foods (fat, lactose), and by stress. At this point, I’ve generally been doing OK on an IBS-friendly diet, an antidepressant, Acacia, some probiotics, peppermint oil capsules, meditation and self-hypnosis, but tend to relapse when I get really stressed.
This tends to happen when I’m in crowds or restaurants (sometimes before I’ve eaten anything). It’s like my GI tract suddenly spasms and air gets trapped, though I don’t get physically bloated.
Then I have to bolt to the bathroom, usually nothing happens, and then really urgently have to bolt back 10 minutes later. This can occasionally go on for a really long time. My question is if you have any suggestions to prevent the sudden spasming in the first place (I take 2 tablespoons of Acacia daily), or if there’s anything I can do once it starts to break up this gas buildup. I usually have only about 2-3 minutes once my stomach starts feeling “off” before the cycle starts. I don't usually have the problems when I'm home so I'm sure it's the "stress" of being out in public.
Thanks!
PS: Just realized the problem of going back and forth got worse after I started taking Align, though I still had the urgency problem before then.
