Irritable Bowel Syndrome Message Boards | Re: a new drug for pain and constipation?

The drug Linaclotide ( Linzess ) has been in clinical trials for a few years. It was approved for use with IBS-C in August of this year. You can read about it in Heather's Research Library It is the latest new drug approved for treating IBS-C. Tegaserod was approved for treating IBS-C a few years ago but it was removed from the market due to cardio-vascular side-effects.

Linaclotide is used for individuals with chronic C or IBS-C. IBS-C is defined as

Recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort at least 3 days per month in the last 3 months associated with 2 or more of the following:
� Improvement with defecation
� Onset associated with a change in stool frequency
� Onset associated with a change in stool form (appearance)

1 or more of the following symptoms on at least 25% of occasions for subgroup identification:

- Abnormal stool frequency (less than 3/week)
� Abnormal stool form (lumpy/hard)
� Abnormal stool passage (straining/incomplete evacuation)
� Bloating or feeling of abdominal distension
� Passage of mucous

It is unknown if this drug is more effective than a laxative such as Miralax. If your symptoms match the above criteria and you have fewer than 3 bowel movements a week then you should talk to you GI doctor about prescribing it.

Didn't you say in a previous posting that you were having many bowel movements a day?
