I may have been just one of the lucky ones, but my experience in London (UK):
-one generic GP in Hampstead gave me a list of FODMAP friendly foods (the same as the one circulating on the internet)
-one gastro specialist did the same in a High Barnet hospital
-other UK doctors have been understanding too but had no real advice, apart from 'experiment and write a food diary, there are no rules'

In Hungary my experience was more mixed, with a lot of grief.

now: stable through EFI+FODMAP dieting (no lactose/no fructose/some fructans and some polyols)

before: IBS-D(pseudo-diarrhoea), bloating, often unbearable pain esp from too much fat: Apr 2007- Dec 2010

[I've tried VSL#3 -> I could tolerate v good amounts of IF (even with less SF), it worked great (but overall I find it too expensive)]
