Indeed my experience with health care professionals has been the same. However, I find that if I make a printed copy of some of the publications with practical information such as the FODMAP diet that they generally appreciate it and sometimes start to use it.

While soluble fiber supplements are not discussed much they do say "Alterations in NSP (dietary fibre) intake are the mainstay of dietary management of IBS. However, there is conflicting evidence for increasing or decreasing intakes." and "Assess dietary fibre, fatty foods, fluid, caffeine, alcohol intake". It looks like they leave this assessment to the attending dietitian probably because in the UK managing dietary fibre is a commonly used to help IBS suffers. The flaw in recommending an increase in bran (insoluble fiber) was first brought to light by a well-known UK GI physician in the 1990s.
