FODMAP as an acronym for Fermentable, Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides and Polyols. These are a group of fermentable short-chain carbohydrates that can be rapidly fermented in the colon causing bloating, gas, distention and discomfort in individuals with functional bowel disorder such as IBS. The clinical trials in Australia and the UK found a reduction in symptoms for about 75% of patients functional bowel disorders. The results have been so good that a large clinical trial is about to begin in the US. You can read more about in this article in the Wall Street Journal
