Caffeine is a strong GI stimulant which can cause GI spasms exacerbating all types of IBS. On the page about constipation Heather "Liquids that contain caffeine, like coffee and cola drinks, and alcoholic beverages, have a dehydrating effect. These liquids are also GI tract irritants, and can exacerbate constipation in Irritable Bowel Syndrome."
