Cliched though it may be, you are what you eat. And whereas stress can exarcebate IBS or indeed upset the digestion of even a healthy individual, diet is the key to getting your IBS under control. I did not use to believe in this and thought that eating whatever I want and adhering to any sort of diet made little difference. Now I don't agree.

A lot of people get bloated from various foods, I can testify that pre-IBS I'd had a lot of bloating, yet never had pain, D or C. Then there was a year in my life when I did not even have bloating due to eating wholewheat bread. Those days are gone, now that I have IBS I can't eat wholegrains. But was it not for the adjustment of my diet and sticking to it for more than a week (!), I'd still have (pseudo-) D. If you have D, nutrients may not reach you and there is a whole host of other complications. I am eating according to EFI rules and taking 3g of SF supplement per day. I do have bloating and I do have a little pain but eating this way has made all the difference. And it's not just about symptoms, I pretty much lived with frequent D for over a year. As I never had urgency and BMs were the most time not smooth at all, I lived with it, thinking exactly along the lines you're thinking.

There are medications which may work, but don't believe it's wise to take them for ever. Hypnosis is something that has worked wonders for people. But the most simple and most effective way of controlling what and how you eat is something that should be working I believe. I do wonder, is it really that you're following the EFI diet to the word and also that you have tried it for at least 2 weeks continuously? And it still has not worked? Do you still have D? Or what symptoms do you have?
