Many people including myself get feelings that the GI tract is inflammed. There is some but not much evidence suggesting that in some instances there may be an inflammatory process involved in IBS. Also, I have read the sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between IBD and IBS-PI particularly in those individuals whose IBS developed after a bout of infectious gastroenteritis. There is an interesting table on this web page that compares the symptoms of IBS and IBD (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease).
