I am seeking some advice for my mom. She has had IBS for about 6 years and has never really had it under control. Over the last year, she has had every test under the sun and her specialist is very close (one more test) to giving her an "official" IBS diagnosis. She just started taking some medicine he gave her for her attacks (can't remember the name, but it dissolves under the tongue). The one symptom he is concerned with is weight loss (which is why she started going to the dr. to begin with).
Over the last month, her symptoms have gotten worse and she is having frequent afternoon bouts with painful diarrhea. This seems to cycle through with bouts of constipation 2-3 days after the attacks.
She is on an extremely restrictive diet (self-imposed - foods she feels are "safe" for her IBS) and I wonder if that is part of her weight loss. Same foods every day - egg whites, toast, apple, banana, potato, french bread, jello, noodles with parmesan cheese...that's it...obviously the diet is not enough to eliminate the symptoms.
Anyone have any thoughts on things to try...we are all so discouraged and frustrated...
