It's difficult to know why your symptoms come back after being gone for a while. I can imagine how frustrating that must be. It is my understanding this is sometimes just the nature of IBS. We can't cure it, all we can do is manage the symptoms through diet, exercise, and stress reduction. I know stress is a big trigger for me, so even if I am eating well, my symptoms can still bother me if something is happening to make me feel anxious or upset. Also, your menstrual cycle can really mess things up in your gut. That could be a contributing factor.
I would look at everything you are doing to manage your IBS. Look at specifics of your diet, supplements, exercise routine, stress management. What can you try or do differently? Have you tried yoga or meditation? How about hypnosis? Maybe try a different probiotic or fiber supplement?
Mostly, I recommend trying to keep perspective. This is definitely a setback, but you felt well before, you will again. Some people, like myself, haven't yet experienced consecutive days free of symptoms, so I consider 8 weeks a really good run. Of course, I can also see how that would make you feel like you're cured, and why it is so upsetting to be back where you were. Just remember, you will feel well again. You will! Focus on that.
