Stool tests are normally done to detect unwanted bacteria not to determine the level of 'good' bacteria. There are about 300-500 different bacteria in the bowel. Your GI doctor is correct. There isn't a reliable stool test to accurately determine if the levels of each of the hundreds of different good bacteria in the bowel are adequate.
