Something I never knew.

I have IBS - D.I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this.. but I found out something amazing to me. I have a new primary care doctor. It is "alternative" medicine. They practice both Eastern and Western medicine. The doctor wanted to send some stool samples away to be tested. I told her that I had on already done that 2 other times at different doctors. I had no parasites or ovum. She said that this would check for that as well, but they also would check for intestinal bacterial (good and bad). Actually count it, and give you a number for what you have. Long story..short it turns out that I had next to no "good" bacteria. They check 3 strains,Lactobacillis, I had none at all that could be measured ,Bifidbactrium- was very low and one other that was fine. I have taken probiotics for years , and it never helped me. It turns out, since my bacteria numbers were so low, OTC Probiotics were not strong enough to re-populate my intestines. The doctor gave me "super-strength" regime for a week. (OTC probiotics are 3-4 billion orginisms or so, this was 170 billion a day for a week)also, since I had no "good bacteria" my other bacteria was high, possibly causing more D. Am I 100% yet.. no. but I feel much better. It's been about 3 weeks including the week of probitoics. Why had I never heard of this before. Doctor after Doctor...for 15 years of suffering and pain, and it could possibly all be fixed by a weeks worth of treatment. The only thing is, since it is "out of the norm" insurance didn't pay for the test. It was 149.00. Possibly the best money I ever spent. I think I will still need to watch my diet ect..but for the first time I have hope, that my symptoms may improve.
