I've been lurking/reading posts here forever, my husband has had IBS since he was a child and this website has re-educated our entire family. But about your gallbladder vs IBS . . . . I just recently had my gallbladder removed 10/16/03 but had none of the normal symptoms ahead of time. Every time I ate a big meal/bad meal, I would get so tired. After supper, I'd lay down on the couch or lay in bed for at least 30 minutes. I had delayed gastric emptying because my gallbladder wasn't working. My right side, immediately under my ribs, would be excruciatingly painful. I had a ton of tests done for gallbladder and all were normal except for one: a HIDA scan. It's a nuclear scan of the gallbladder. I had NO STONES in my gallbladder - it simply didn't work anymore. The ejection fraction was in the teens (like 18% and bottom end of normal is 35%, I think) but it meant that when I ate, my gallbladder simply didn't work so my food was being digested and it would make me so tired. The HIDA scan measures the function of the gallbladder in a way that no other test does. The back pain was horrendous and would wake me in the middle of the night, it would be so excruciating. I'd wrap the sheet around the footboard so I could use it to pull me up, my back hurt that bad. I felt like a nut till I had the HIDA scan and thank goodness, I wasn't crazy, it was my gall bladder. So make sure you have all the right tests!!! Now I'm taking my husband's fiber caps as my body is having time getting adjusted to all the bile acids in my small intestine but I feel SO MUCH BETTER! I can eat a normal meal and feel normally full afterwards. It's wonderful! Good luck!
