I've just found out I have IBS and have been reading through the triggering foods on the website - and high fat foods are listed. I'm in a quandary now. Because of a facial injury, I'm unable to chew, and I live on milkshakes and fruit smoothies and I've lost seventeen pounds (and I was already slender). I was 122, now I weigh 105, which I haven't weighed since I was probably twelve years old. I actually began suffering from protein-calorie malnutrition and started having heart trouble, etc. I lost so much leg muscle I could hardly walk. I can still hardly sit. And IBS sure didn't help with the constant diarrhea and occasional vomiting. Anyway I've been trying to recover from malnutrition and trying to gain weight, by making sure I have enough calories per day, plus I take vitamins, minerals, supplements, electrolytes. Since eating makes me so nauseas I try to eat small portions of high calorie foods. Usually fatty foods are the best way to do this - for example a single avocado has over 300 calories and one sardine has 90 calories, etc. So I've been consuming a lot of high fat foods. Now I'm finding that's one of the major things I have to eliminate from my diet. My question is, how do I follow a diet to help my IBS symptoms, and yet still get enough calories and manage to gain weight when I can't chew and suffer from severe nausea? Help!
