Snuffie,

I use a tablespoon of ground flax seed in my oatmeal in the AM and then put another tablespoon in applesauce later in the day. Ground flax is both a soluable/insoluable fiber and okay for IBS. You get the most benefit from the seeds if you buy the flaxseed whole and then grind in a coffee grinder. Use the ground seeds right away as all nutritional benefits are lost if you grind them and store in otder to use later. So if you buy already ground flax you will not get nearly the benefits as you do with grinding them yourself. Also baking with flax seed gives no nutritional benefit as the nutrients are lost in the baking process.
