I lived in the UK from 1990 - 2000. I have received treatment in both Canada and the UK. I found the availability of tests and the knowledge of GI docs to be superior in the UK compared to Canada. The UK has some of the world's leading researchers and IBS clinics. For example, Professor Whorwell at Manchester University who was the first to understand the role of soluble fiber, developed gut directed hypnotherapy and is currently doing leading research on the use of probiotics for IBS and other GI disorders. Overall, I found the standard of treatment of IBS of in the UK to be better than here in Canada.

I have not found a dietitian anywhere that truly understands how to advise on IBS particularly the role of SF & IF.

I would never expect a health shop employee to under IBS when most doctors don't it. They sell what they know even if what they know is wrong. Usually they are well intentioned but seriously lack knowledge and training.

The IBS literature that has been translated so the lay person can read it is easy to understand. Finding this literature it is difficult anywhere in the world.

I have tried alternative therapies but none of them helped.

IBS is a disease - actually a syndrome - which is diagnosed through a process of exclusion. It is not identified directly because no one anywhere in the world has a way to test for it directly. The research on IBS has had some significant break breakthroughs in the past decade. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be still some time before anyone anywhere really knows what causes it or how to cure it. Hopefully the next generation of IBS suffers will have more knowledge and treatments available to them than we do.

IBS is a frustrating disease. However, there are pockets of knowledgeable IBS docs everywhere. The difficulty is finding them. You might try contacting the South Manchester Functional Bowel Service directed by Professor Whorwell.

IBS is a frustrating disease and the world wide knowledge is limited. Good luck in finding a good resources to help you
