I think in the strictest sense the brain-gut axis (or connection) relates to inappropriate perception of physiological events by the brain, and possibly altered reflex responses in the gut. IBS could reflect a hyperreactivity in a brain-gut system that includes receptors in the gut, the enteric nerve system, and CNS. It is possible that this hyperreactivity may be triggered by both psychological and biological factors at different levels in the system. So there is some overlap between the brain-gut model, the role of neurotransmitters and hormones and central dysregulation. It get confusing when looking at the details as to where the distinctions between the models lie
