It is not surprizing to hear that your relatives and friends manage okay with the traditional advice. Even Matthew and Whorwell in their editorial about the effect of bran on hospitalized IBS patients made guarded comments in their conclusions which read:

In conclusion, it is probably best to recommend that patients with IBS be left to judge for themselves whether bran helps or exacerbates their symptoms, but there is enough evidence to suggest that the current dogma of routinely treating all IBS sufferers with bran should be challenged. Proprietary sources of fiber, such as ispaghula, may be more appropriate for those IBS subjects (for example, constipated) for whom fiber supplementation is believed justified.

My mother was IBS-C. Bran and raw veggies were central in the management of her symptoms. On the other hand I cannot tolerate much IF. However, it would be nice if more IBS professionals and observers would discuss the role and scope of all dietary fiber types in an IBS management diet.
