Hello everyone,
I'm new to the board and have been struggling with diarrhea (on and off) for the last 4 months. I've done an elimination diet, added supplements (e.g., probiotics) and I've been told by my GI specialist that I have IBS (but I don't believe this is so because I have no pain). After reading Heather's books this past week, I think I'm right about my own diagnosis. However, I decided to take the advice in her books, simply because whichever way I look at it, I need to improve my overall digestion. Plus, my doctor recommended I take two tsp. of psyllium per day -- and psyllium was something I saw in Heather's book.
I've switched to increasing my soluble fiber (especially on an empty stomach). I've started taking Caltrate (in the past, it has constipated me), and I've started psyllium (1 level tsp/day). I was surprised how well this all worked within two days, but I seem to be regressing. The diarrhea came back today.
I guess my questions have to do with the soluble fiber supplements. I drink 64 oz. of water/day. Is this enough? If you take psyllium without enough water, does it increase your diarrhea or is it supposed to slow down your transit time?
Also, over the months of Feb. and Mar. (when I was getting noticeably better - the diarrhea stopped), I was taking a 2:1 Cal-Mag supplement that I've just realized had methylcellulose in it. The methylcellulose is just a filler in the supplement, but as I've gone off it (due to GERD symptoms), my diarrhea came back. Is it possilbe that such a small amount of methylcellulose could have help me for almost two months straight? If so, could methylcellulose be a better soluble fiber source for me than psyllium? Does methylcellulose have side effects?
Everytime I think I'm at the end of my rope, the rope gets longer! Any information you could provide me would be much appreciated.
Alison.
