I always get gas stuck on the left hand side of my intestines, but not as high up as you describe. Mine is usually just below the belly button and to the left. I use a heating pad and drink either fennel or peppermint tea when it acts up.
You are doing the right thing by seeing a doctor. A colonoscopy will give you the answer to whether you have IBS or not. Your systems seem to lean that way, but everyone is different so it is hard to say.
