I started having symptoms when I was 12 years old, but was too embarrassed to tell anyone. I had very painful D every morning until about 8 years ago when I went on the Atkins diet. My pain went away. I became friends with a lady who had celiac and convinced me that gluten was my problem. I went on the GF diet and never bothered to see a doctor. I was symptom-free on the GF diet until last year when the D came back, but no pain. The pain only comes exactly 24hr after eating gluten. Last week, I finally had a colonscopy, endoscopy, blood tests and biopsy. The doctor says it's not celiac and he saw no sign of colitis or Crohn's. He said that unless the biopsies show something unusual, I have IBS. I bought Heather's book and a different book that uses a diet that is total opposite of Heather's diet. I don't understand how both books can claim to relieve symptoms and be opposite of each other. I know that I'm lactose intolerant and suspect soy intolerance, too. Many of the recipes in Heather's book call for soy products. Will I eventually be able to tolerate them? Does gluten cause problems for some people with IBS? Thanks!
