Milk of Magnesia: Stimulant or not?

I was always under the impression that MOM was a relatively safe way to relieve constipation as it doesn't use stimulation to produce a bm, so it's not dependency forming. (The "stimulant-free" advertising for Phillips?) However, Heather's book "The First Year..." says:

"The use of chemical laxatives (such as Milk of Magnesia or ExLax), which tend to stimulate the bowel by causing an irritated lining, is not recommended as they can easily lead to dependency and they're harmful to the colon."

So which is it? My doctor has me trying adding concentrated strawberry flavored MOM to 1/2 C applesauce with dinner every night to see it that helps relieve me. I'd prefer that to the two prescription drugs she wants me to try... but not if it's bad for me.

* Thanks a lot both of you! I was wary of taking MOM long-term anyway...
