As far as I know, Benefiber is pure Soluble Fiber. Based on my experience, this means it will:
- soothe your gut, thereby helping ease spasms - bulk up your stool, so it should be smoother and more continuous - help get rid of that feeling of "incomplete evacuation" - provide a cushion so IF won't send you into spasms
However, if you're C and you do not get a sufficient amount of INsoluble fiber, you're still going to be constipated. People with IBS-C need both Soluble and Insoluble Fiber to resolve the problem.
Check out these two old newsletter for some specific ideas about IBS-C, especially the importance of getting enough Soluble Fiber and the importance of INsoluble Fiber:
Part 1
Part 2
As far as I know, there is no cure for IBS. I have seen people on the Board say their IBS seems to go away for a while from time to time, but I haven't seen anyone say their IBS cleared up and never came back. Sorry.
I figure I'm going to be following the EFI Diet for the rest of my life unless medical science discovers a miracle cure - with no side effects. There are foods I miss, but I'm so much better than I was before I found this Website that I figure watching what I eat is a fair trade for being stable.
HTH.
