So after everyone's help in getting this coffee cake recipe worked out, I'm mixing the topping first, as instructed and my BF has this fancy shmancy spice carousel thing where the spice names are written in thin black print on a silver background; kinda hard to read, especially for me, since I'm legally blind. Well, I read the labels with my magnifying glass for this particular reason. Yep, that one's cinnamon. So I'm crumbling up the topping mix and something smells very wrong. It smells familiar though. So back to the spice rack I go. Oh dear. I just put cumin into the cinnamon cake topping! Now under normal circumstances, I think I might have even thrown a tantrum (mood disorders are fun that way), but I guess I was in a good enough mood to laugh at myself, and lucky enough to have enough time and enough ingredients left to start over on mixing the topping again. This time, I was like omg I know there's cinnamon on this darn carousel, but the bottles weren't looking like they had the correct colored spices in them. But I found it. The word "cinnamon" is so faded, you can barely tell what it reads. A pleasant whiff and I confirm it's cinnamon. At some point, and I have no idea how, I somehow spilled a good load of cinnamon all over the stove, too, and inside one of the burners. Ugh, what a mess to wipe up. It wasn't a sprinkling, it was a pile so it took several wet paper towels and a sponge... now I'm pouring the batter (almost forgot to spray with nonstick spray!) and realize that something else isn't right. Oh geez, I set the oven temp, but never turned it on. So now, my batter is sitting in the pan, topping sitting in the bowl while the oven preheats. Okay, fine, I'll do the dishes, that should be close enough of a time frame for preheating. Finally, no more disasters, YET!!

Um, here's a P.S. before this even gets posted - after 12 minutes (better to start out w/less cook time than too much), the cake smells good, the topping is browned, but sticking a knife in the center, the center is totally wet. Yikes. Maybe it's an 8-inch square, it doesn't seem deeper than a cake pan though, but I have no depth perception, so who knows... yeah... god help us all. :P

* LOL, exactly Shell! And usually we don't think we have to sniff our spices. NT
