They are both cultured milk products, but they are different. Kefir is not milk that changes into yogurt over night. Yogurt has beneficial bacteria that can keep your digestive system clean. But the beneficial bacteria in kefir can actually colonize the intestinal tract. Kefir also doesn't need to have the thick consistency yogurt does, you can drink it too.

I actually bought kefir grains from someone and tried doing it, but it didn't turn out good for me. I think I may have waited too long before I put them in the milk so I think they died.
