I don't take an SFS. They make me gassy & bloated. They increase my D. They also give me stringy orange bm's for some strange reason. It's very much akin to pumpkin innards if I take an SFS.
I'm more or less stable, with a little Immodium assistance & safe food prep. guidelines. I eat tons of SF and IF, most of the time. I play it by ear & listen to my body's cues, too. I eat as organically as possible which decreases attacks. I'm a very sensitive individual, food-wise. I food process most foods. I take digestive enzymes, liquid vitamin/mineral supplements. I use Beano with notoriously gassy foods if I'm in the mood to eat them. I don't add fats which eliminates many attacks. Lately, safely prepared plant fiber feels good (I really follow Heather's guidelines re: IBS-safe food prep. and cannot believe that I'm eating Beans without a "toot" or a whisper. I should be spontaneously combusting, but I can seriously fit into my size 4 jeans after having eaten over 50g of assorted fibers from food, today!)
I'm not good with plant gum products. Psyllium actually painfully constipated me. Inulin gave me cramping & bloating--and a D-type of spasmodic response. So...I keep it pretty grass-roots & earthy & simple--mostly diet, attitude/lifestyle changes, intuitive eating, applying Heather's advice, Immodium as required, fennel/mint teas, etc. Food combining also makes a difference in my IBS. Eliminating gluten eliminated a lot of problems. IBS is one of those funny things--you never know when it's going to change on you. My IBS, when I was a young teen, was completely different. After menopause, things really switched.
Kate, IBS-D.
