Donnatal. This stuff ROCKS!
Do a search and you'll find a million posts about this stuff. It's PHENOMENAL! Truly, it works every single time. However, as my doctor told me over and over again, there is no drug that doesn't have SOME side effect(s) -- NONE. And if someone tells you differently, they're wrong. (That from the doc.)
Donnatal is considered dangerous because it contains Phenobarbital, which CAN BE addictive. I've taken Donnatal for over 5 years now, and I can assure you I am not addicted. I only take it SPARINGLY, just when I have an attack -- a SERIOUS attack -- that has me doubled over in pain. I've gone through only one bottle of the stuff in 5 years. The new prescription I got is already expired, yet it's a full bottle, never been used. So I ask you, how addictive could that be, eh?
I've tried all the other antispasmodics, but none of them work like Donnatal. You may have a problem getting it, though, because doctors are hesitant to prescribe it unless they know you well and know you are not an "addictive" type.
Have you tried Heather's peppermint capsules? She claims they're more effective than Donnatal as an antispasmodic, and she should know because she used to take Donnatal. If your doctor won't prescribe the Donnatal for you, check out Heather's peppermint caps.
Also, if your cramps aren't severe, a FABULOUS over-the-counter soluble fiber supplement is Equalactin, which I take almost every day. Do a search; you'll find lots about it here. It's hard to find, but pharmacists will order it for you if they don't stock it. It works fast, which I like, but only on mild-to-medium cramping.
Like I said, if my cramps are severe, I go for the Donnatal.
