The UP is gorgeous - you can spend a whole day just hiking around to different waterfalls. There's also glass-bottom boat tours (the better to see the shipwrecks with) and all sorts of boating. I'm guessing you'd find it to be awfully similar to Washington State! And Detroit can be fun, too. Eastern Market is a hoot, Windsor is fun to visit (if harder now post-9/11), and you can get a good (albeit not IBS-safe) Polish meal in Hamtramck where my husband used to live.
